The Open Tournament running from the
18th-23rd August was a great
success as many of Britain's top tennis players took to the courts
to play in the club's first open tennis tournament for 20 years.
Men's singles winner, Tim Hewitt of Bournemouth, overcame local
player Jeffrey Zungunde to take home a £750 winners prize. The
ladies prize was won by 24-year-old Emily Webley-Smith who trains
at Sutton Tennis Acadamy.
Juniors of all ages filled the
clubhouse throughout the week. A group inner-city children
travelled from Southwark every morning, and families came from all
over the south-east, with 2 players even coming from as far as
Yorkshire. The pool table took a pounding and the kitchen was kept
busy all week satisfying the appetites of the energetic young
tennis players. Club members joined in the fun too, with social
events every evening - a barbecue, a curry night, quizzes and a
fantastic barbershop quartet who serenaded players and spectators
after the matches had finished.
Such a successful first year means
that the STSC Open Tournament will definitely run next year. We
look forward to seeing you!
