Here are the highlights of the 2020 National Premier League tennis final, which was staged at Sutton Tennis & Squash Club. This match is Sutton v Halton, with Emily Appleton & Lily Miyazaki beating Katy Dunne & Lucy Brown in a championship tiebreak.
The highlights of the final were captured using a new auto-highlights system called ReplAI, developed by Peak Indicators.
The National Premier League is an event which takes place in the winter every year. It could be best described as the winter version of the National Club Championships.
It attracts players of the highest level, with past & current players including Wimbledon Stars Pat Cash, Marcus Willis, Jamie Murray, Jonny Marray, Laura Robson & Anne Keothavong. Winners of this event can call themselves National Champions.
Thanks to the amazing efforts of Ladies Team Captain, Lucy Charlton and all the players, our Ladies’ team qualified for the finals of the event. Those players are:
- Emily Appleton
- Lara Bakhaya
- Gisela Castany
- Lucy Charlton
- Danielle Hack
- Jodie Lawrence Taylor
- Lily Miyazaki,
- Orianna Parkins Godwin
- Sally Petthybridge
- Natasha Starling
- Lucy Weber
Friday v Edgbaston Priory
Saturday v David Lloyd Sunderland
This was a NAIL BITER! going all the way to a 10 point shootout, which Emily Appleton & Tash Starling held their nerve to win.
The Final v Halton
A very strong Halton team ensured that this would be a tough final. Halton’s top player on the day, Katy Dunne, is current world no. 324, with a career high of 212 in singles and 135 doubles.
Sutton’s 1st pair of Lily Miyazaki (WTA 350) and Emily Appleton (WTA 672) beat Halton’s 2nd pair and Halton’s 1st pair did the same to Sutton’s 2nd. So the 1 v 1 and 2 v 2 match could be everything.
Sutton’s 2nd pair of Tash Starling & Danielle Hack won in straight sets, meaning a win for Lily & Emily would win the title for Sutton. After coming from a set down, Sutton won the next set, taking it to a championship tie-break. Winners, Sutton!
Congratulations Sutton Ladies, Team Captain Lucy Charlton and all the players.
