Update about mix in format 13th May 2022

Changes to Social Mix-In Format

The mix-in sessions are a great way to not only socialise, but to play some fun, competitive tennis. Currently sessions are run 3 times a week (Tuesday and Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon) and it is our ambition for these sessions to be as inclusive and accessible to all members as possible.

With a new format in place, the current advanced mix-in will be dropped in favour of 3 sessions open to all members, with the exception of beginners. Simply put, you must be able to play a full game of tennis.

Tuesday and Thursday will be supervised by a coach, as it is now, to help the system work. This will be during school term only, which is approximately 40 weeks of the year. All Saturdays and school holidays will be unsupervised.

Why are we looking to change the format?

There is no hiding from the fact that we all play to different competitive levels; if mix-ins are going to be enjoyable, it is important that they are set up so that you can all get competitive games. At some point we have all been involved in a one-sided match and it is not a great deal of fun.

So we want to introduce a new system to help ensure that everyone gets good, competitive matches and enjoy the time you all take out of your busy lives to attend a mix-in.

We have considered many different approaches, each has their own pros and cons, but we believe what is outlined below will bring the most benefit.

The New Format

A simple banding system is being proposed and will work as follows:

  1. All players will be banded into 3 pools based on their competitive ability (Green, blue, purple)
  2. Matches will be selected based on players’ banding
  3. Green players can play with blue players
  4. Blue players can play with purple players
  5. Avoid green and purple players playing together
  6. If numbers allow, players in the same band will be kept together

What this should do is get 4 players on a court of similar competitive ability and avoid those situations where someone is playing in a match that is too high, or too low, in terms of competitiveness.

As attendance can vary, there may be situations where green and purple players have to mix so that we can keep matches on court. We expect that in this case all concerned will be accepting of the situation in the interest of playing. We also ask you to be understanding that matches will not rotate as much as before in certain situations. As a basic example, if there were 4 green players and 4 blue players, those games would mix amongst themselves for the entire time and not merge with each other.

The mix-in session is over 2 hours, so it will be split into 20 min rounds to accommodate 4-5 matches per session. Play as many games as possible in that 20 minutes before being mixed again.

So the structure of a mix in would usually be as follows:

  • 2.00pm / 7.00pm – warm up
  • 2.10-2.30pm / 7.10-7.30pm – round 1
  • 2.35–2.55pm / 7.35-7.55pm – round 2
  • 3.00-3.20pm / 8.00-8.20pm – round 3
  • 3.25-3.45pm / 8.25-8.45pm – round 4
  • 3.50 / 8.50pm – members could stay on for one more depending on numbers & court availability.

Matches are final-point deuce and can finish the game they are on when time is up.

In the event of hard courts being used, an effort should be made to give members a balance of different surfaces, but logistics will sometimes mean that this is more difficult to achieve. We ask members to be understanding that this will balance out over time. We also ask for understanding that it may not be possible to cater to members who cannot play on hard courts due to injury. The mix in is predominantly on artificial clay but everyone involved must be prepared to play on both surfaces.

FAQs

Who will determine a player’s band?

This will be assigned by the coaching team who will supervise 2 of the sessions

How do I change bands?

Coaches will continuously assess at every supervised mixed-in session and reassign a player’s band if necessary, to ensure they get the most out of their attendance.

How often will my band change?

Ideally, we do not want to be switching players between bands frequently as that would be too disruptive, but if it becomes clear that you would benefit from a change it will then take place

When will the system go into effect?

We are planning on launching the system on Tuesday 7th June. This will give you all time to get familiar with it and also this session will be coach-supervised.

Remember, the key objective is to ensure that you get the most out of your attendance and so do all your fellow members. It is a social mix-in at heart and we want it to remain fun, friendly, and welcoming to all.

If you have any constructive ideas or feedback on how we can improve this further, please do let one of us know. This will only be a success if we have your buy-in and support.
